Namaste! Welcome to the beautiful tourist area of Domukha!
Located in Shivasatakshi Municipality–10, Jhapa district, Domukha is one of the most peaceful and naturally rich places in eastern Nepal. Surrounded by green hills, the flowing Kanakai River, and a refreshing environment, this destination offers a perfect escape from busy city life.
About Domukha
Domukha lies on the banks of the Kanakai River, at the border of Ilam’s Mai Municipality–8. It is both a religious and tourist hotspot. Every year, thousands of people visit for picnics, film shoots, festivals, and spiritual trips.
The name “Domukha” comes from the two outlets (or “two mouths”) of the Kanakai River, created when the Korean Development Corporation (KDC), with technical and financial support from the Japanese built a canal that diverted the river southward.
Because of its natural beauty and growing popularity, the Domukha Religious and Tourism Development Management Committee was established in 2062 B.S. (2005 A.D.) to promote tourism, develop facilities, and preserve its spiritual importance.
Did you know? The famous Nepali movie “Saathi”, starring Rajesh Hamal, Karishma Manandhar, and Gauri Malla, was filmed here!
The Kanakai River and Irrigation System
The Kanakai River starts from the Mahabharat mountain range and flows through the Chure hills before reaching the plains of Jhapa. With the help of the Japanese government, a canal was built to irrigate thousands of hectares of fertile land.
Today, the Kanakai Irrigation System (KIS) supplies water to around 8,000 hectares of farmland across four municipalities: Shivasatakshi, Kamal, Gauradaha, and Gaurigunj.
The weir-type headworks- a structure that helps control river flow is located right in Domukha, just 3 km north of the East-West Mahendra Highway.

a month agoScenic beauty & peace: Domukha lies beside the Kankai (also called Mai) River, near the Chure (Churia) hills, making it a serene retreat. Lush greenery, river views, and the flow of canal systems make it especially quiet and relaxing. Cultural flavour: You can experience local Limbu / eastern Nepalese culture, with its traditions, food, dance and rituals. Devotees visit for religious reasons as well. Good for day trips / picnics: It’s become popular among locals for picnics, photography, day-out with friends or family. The riverbank and shaded spots are a boon, especially in warmer seasons. Improving infrastructure: Roads are getting better, there’s a new truss bridge, ongoing work for parking, restrooms, children’s park, even a museum and swimming pool under development. These make access easier and stay more comfortable. --- What Could Be Better Facilities are still developing: Though many amenities are planned or in progress, at present restrooms, food stalls, and lodging options might be limited. Crowds at peak times: On weekends and festival or picnic seasons it gets busy. If you want solitude, non-peak times are better. Weather / monsoon may complicate things: Rainy season could make roads muddy, river flow strong, limiting riverbank access. --- Verdict Domukha is a lovely destination if you want a blend of natural beauty and gentle cultural tourism without the intensity of big tourist spots. For short escapes, especially from cities, it's refreshing. If you go, plan around the weather, be ready for simpler amenities, and try to visit when it’s less crowded to fully enjoy the calm.
