Patal Ganga Jhapa is a peaceful and sacred temple located in Mechinagar-8, near the Tokla Tea Estate in eastern Nepal. It is a popular spiritual and local tourist destination known for its calm environment and fascinating legend.
According to local legends, Patal Ganga was formed after the great Nepal-Bihar earthquake of 1934 (1990 BS). After the earthquake, a white, milky spring suddenly erupted from the ground at this very spot. Locals saw it as a divine sign, believing that the sacred water of the Ganga River from the underworld (Patala) had revealed itself here.
This event made the area a holy pilgrimage site, and in 1985 (2042 BS), the Patal Ganga Temple was built with community support. Since then, it has become a place of worship, peace, and devotion for people of the region.
Visitors come here not only for religious rituals but also to relax, enjoy picnics, and feel the spiritual calm of nature. The site becomes especially crowded with devotees during Maha Shivaratri and other local festivals, drawing devotees from nearby areas.
With its mix of faith, history, and natural beauty, Patal Ganga stands as one of Jhapa’s most meaningful and peaceful spiritual destinations.
