"Illam" is a term commonly used in various South Asian cultures, particularly in India and Nepal, to refer to a traditional ancestral house or mansion. The concept of an illam is deeply rooted in cultural and historical contexts, often associated with joint families and a sense of heritage.Illams are typically characterized by their architectural significance, featuring a unique blend of traditional design elements. These houses often have spacious courtyards, intricate woodwork, and multiple rooms to accommodate extended families. The layout of an illam is thoughtfully planned to foster familial bonds and community living. One of the notable aspects of an illam is its role as a repository of family history and traditions. Passed down through generations, these houses hold the memories of ancestors, preserving cultural practices, rituals, and customs. The elders in the family, as the repository of knowledge, play a crucial role in imparting wisdom and values to the younger members. However, the concept of illam has evolved over time. Changes in societal structures, urbanization, and economic shifts have led to a decline in the prevalence of traditional illams. Many have been repurposed or replaced by modern housing, reflecting the changing dynamics of family life and societal norms.Despite these changes, illams continue to be revered as symbols of cultural heritage and familial roots. Efforts to preserve and document the architectural and cultural aspects of illams are underway to ensure that this rich heritage is not lost to the sands of time.

Antu is one of my favorite place for a short holiday. Just a 2 hour trip from Birtamod Jhapa one can find a whole different environment. Sunrise, antu pokhari, boating, roaming around pokhari and teagarden has always been my favorite. Cool weather and warm hospitality makes the best combination for a short trip. One shouldn’t miss the campfire, sekuwa in the cold breezy evening.
I will definitely visit Antu again!!!
